FruitBuys Vietnam Elevate Your Business Partner With A Reliable Freeze Dried Mangosteen Supplier

Is freeze-dried mangosteen from Vietnam ready for your market, and what should you check before buying in bulk?

Yes. It gives a snack, chocolate or gifting range a fruit few shelves carry, sold on a one-line label: “100% mangosteen”. The import side does not stand in the way: the product ships in a standard dry container, clears on a familiar document set, and is not on the EU list of foods under increased border checks. What sets it apart from mango or pineapple is the fruit itself: it is hand-peeled from a rind that is most of its weight, its best harvest lasts about ten weeks, and its value sits in whole, ivory, flower-shaped arils that have to reach your customer intact. A supplier worth shortlisting answers for all three. This guide sets out what to check, and links to the detail behind each point.

Why buy freeze-dried mangosteen at all?

Because few shelves have it, and demand is moving towards it. Mangosteen is a fruit many shoppers have heard of and few have tasted, and freeze-drying brings it to them in a form that travels and keeps: crisp, sweet-tart and floral, 100% fruit, with no added sugar and 13.3 g of fibre per 100 g. US menu tracking reported in 2025 projects mangosteen to appear on roughly three times as many menus by 2029. In the US there is a further reason: fresh Vietnamese mangosteen is not cleared for import, so freeze-dried is how Lai Thieu and Mekong Delta fruit reaches that market; the background is in is mangosteen banned in the US. And with Thailand’s 2026 mangosteen output forecast in March to fall by about 15%, a second origin is worth having. The same scarcity is why supply has to be planned: the fruit is hard to peel and its best window is short.

What specification should the contract fix?

Four numbers and three visual standards:

ParameterContract figure
Moisture≤5.0% (release target ≤3%)
Water activity≤0.30
Total plate count / yeasts & moulds≤10⁴ / ≤10² CFU/g
E. coli / Salmonella<10 CFU/g / not detected in 25 g
FormatWhole arils (complete clusters; intact single segments conform), diced or powder
Breakage, whole arils≤10% by weight, counted as fragments under half a single segment; ≤5% tray-packed
AppearanceIvory white to light cream, no browning, no purple rind, no yellow latex specks; a natural pink blush and the crisp natural seed are conforming

Water activity is the line to sign on: at or below 0.30 the arils stay airy and crisp; above it they turn tacky in the bag. Rind is the defect specific to mangosteen: one purple fragment makes a mouthful bitter. Write the natural marks into the specification as well, so a pink blush at the crown or a seed in a segment is never argued about at arrival. The reasoning behind each limit is in what limits freeze-dried mangosteen should meet.

What does a realistic quote look like?

One built on about 17–24 kg of whole fruit, or 5–6 kg of hand-peeled aril, per kilo of finished product. The cost of freeze-dried mangosteen sits in peeling, not drying, so a quote far below what that much fruit costs is usually built on late-season fruit, rushed peeling or sugar infusion. Ask any supplier for the production month and the total sugars: pure freeze-dried mangosteen carries about 70 g of natural sugar per 100 g, with 0 g added. The full logic is in how many kilos of mangosteen make 1 kg of freeze-dried.

When should you book?

Before April. The main crop runs from May to August, and the best fruit for whole arils comes from May to mid-July. Those arils are frozen at −25 °C in season and freeze-dried to order, so containers ship in any month with a recent production date; what April decides is how many whole arils are frozen for your programme. Later orders are still served, as diced or powder. The calendar is set out in where and when Vietnam’s mangosteen is harvested.

Capacity of up to 100 tonnes a year of finished freeze-dried product across multi-fruit lines is allocated by harvest window, with mangosteen volume set by pre-season confirmation. Production lead time is 20–30 days per 20ft after deposit.

Which format, and how much fits in a container?

FormatBest forCarton20ft, floor-loaded
Whole arilsRetail snacks, gift boxes, chocolate-dipped fruit7 kgabout 3.85 t
DicedCereal, granola, chocolate and bakery inclusions10 kgabout 5.5 t
PowderBeverages, tea, dairy flavouring20 kgabout 11 t

All three come from the same fruit; what changes is the shelf they serve and the freight per kilo. Whole arils earn their freight where the shape sells the pack; diced and powder carry more fruit per container where it disappears into a recipe. Powder has its own specification, set out in what to specify before buying freeze-dried mangosteen powder in bulk. Which documents ship with every container?

DocumentPurpose
Lot COA (third party)Moisture, aw, TPC, yeasts & moulds, E. coli, Salmonella
Certificate of Origin Form EUR.1 or CEPAEUR.1 claims the EU–Vietnam and UK–Vietnam FTA preference, which matters most for powder; Form CEPA claims the UAE–Vietnam preference
Phytosanitary certificateIncluded with every shipment as part of the standard export dossier
Invoice, packing list, B/LCustoms value, lot codes, title

HS 0804.50, the heading for mangoes and mangosteens fresh or dried, covers whole arils and diced, which enter the EU at 0% from any origin; powder is classified under 1106.30. Mangosteen is not on the EU list of foods under increased border checks, so containers move through routine controls. Duty and documents by market are in which HS code freeze-dried mangosteen ships under.

How do you know the container will match the sample?

Through three controls written into the contract:

  • One locked facility. FruitBuys coordinates the orchards and contracted processing and locks one qualified facility per contract. Any change needs prior written notice and re-approval of the pre-shipment sample, and you have audit access. This matters most in June, when the harvest peaks and an unmanaged order gets split across whichever dryers have space; with the facility locked, your container comes off the line that made your sample. The facility holds HACCP, ISO 22000, BRC (qualified processing facility) and US FDA Facility Registration, with Halal certification available on request.
  • A pre-shipment sample from the packed lot, 100–200 g in two sealed pouches: one to open, one to keep sealed as your reference.
  • A retained sample from every container lot, kept for its full shelf life, with claim windows of 14 days from devanning for appearance, breakage and aw, and 30 days for laboratory results.

The process is set out in how to make sure the bulk shipment matches the approved sample.

What about labels and private label?

The ingredient line is “100% mangosteen”, with “Contains natural seeds” on retail packs. Energy is 400 kcal per 100 g on a US label and 360 kcal on an EU label; 13.3 g of fibre supports a “good source of fiber” label at the 40 g US serving and “high fibre” in the EU. Sell on taste, clean label and fibre: most of mangosteen’s xanthones sit in the rind. Private-label packing starts at 500 kg, about 10,000 pouches of 50 g, with digital-print pouches for a first run. Your 10-point RFQ checklist

These are the ten points FruitBuys answers in writing with every quote. Send the same list to any supplier you are shortlisting and compare the replies line by line:

  1. Moisture and water activity limits, and which one is the release figure
  2. Lot COA parameters per container, and the laboratory accreditation
  3. Breakage definition and limit for whole arils
  4. Defects (rind, yellow latex, glassy pieces) and natural marks (pink blush, seed) written into the specification
  5. Production month and harvest window for your lot
  6. Conversion ratio behind the quote (kg of whole fruit and of peeled aril per kg)
  7. Facility named in the contract, with change-control and audit access
  8. Pre-shipment sample from the packed lot, plus retained sample
  9. HS code per format and the document set per container
  10. Carton weight and container load for your format

A supplier who answers all ten in writing is one you can plan a season with.

When is freeze-dried mangosteen not the right buy?

When you need more whole arils than were confirmed before April, certified organic product at container scale, or fewer than 500 kg in your own pouches. Each has a working route:

If you needRoute that works
More whole arils after AprilTake the balance as diced or powder; confirm next season’s whole-aril volume before April
Certified organicNot available at container scale today; launch on a single-ingredient, no-added-sugar label, with an optional multi-residue panel for your market
Under 500 kgBuy 1–5 kg bulk bags and pack locally, or start with a trial or LCL order to qualify the product
