Freeze-Dried Yellow Sweet Potato Powder for Bakery, Cereal, Drinks and Pet Food

Freeze-dried yellow sweet potato powder is 100% Japanese-type sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas, red skin, golden flesh), blanched, freeze-dried and milled to 80–100 mesh. No maltodextrin or other carrier, no added sugar, colour or sulfites. It brings three things to a recipe at once: a natural golden colour, a chestnut-like sweetness and the root’s own fiber. FruitBuys supplies it from Vietnam in bulk foil bags and private-label packs for bakery, noodle, cereal, beverage and pet-food manufacturers. It sits in our dried fruit powder range and is milled from the same roots as our freeze-dried yellow sweet potato pieces.

Stir a spoonful into warm milk and you get a smooth, golden drink that smells of baked sweet potato, with no cooking step. Fold it into bread dough and the crumb turns a soft gold without a synthetic colour on the label. That is the job this powder is bought for.

100% or free-flowing. The standard grade is 100% sweet potato, which keeps a one-word ingredient line. If your line runs stick-packs or auger fillers, specify the free-flowing grade with silicon dioxide (E551) at ≤1%, declared on the label.

Mesh. 80–100 mesh disperses evenly in dough and dry blends and leaves no grit in a drink. Sweet potato is lower in natural sugar than most fruit powders, so it mills this fine without caking in the mill.

Moisture and water activity. ≤5.0% in the contract, 3–4% at partner facility release, Aw ≤0.30. That gap is what keeps the powder free-flowing in your warehouse rather than setting into a block.

Per 100 g, the powder meets the EU thresholds for “high fibre”, “high potassium”, “low sodium” and “no added sugars”. In a finished product the claim depends on your dose, so FruitBuys runs a nutrition panel on your commercial lot for the label. For baby cereal makers. The US FDA action level for lead in processed foods for children under two is 20 ppb for single-ingredient root vegetables and dry infant cereals. Build that into your ingredient spec from the start: FruitBuys books a heavy-metal panel on your lot before stuffing, matched to your market. In the EU, claims on cereal-based foods for infants are tightly restricted, so plan the pack around the ingredient story rather than nutrition claims.

For pet food. Sweet potato is one of the carbohydrates pet brands choose for grain-free recipes, and the new US pet-food label asks for total carbohydrate including fiber, which the lot nutrition panel supplies. Grades, spec and documents for pet makers: freeze-dried sweet potato for pet food.

When another product fits better. If you need a neutral white thickener for a sauce or a glass noodle, sweet potato starch is the right ingredient; FD powder carries colour, flavour and fiber. Many bakeries use both, starch for texture and FD powder for colour and taste, and FruitBuys can suggest a starting blend for your trial. For pieces that stay visible in a cereal or cup soup, use freeze-dried sweet potato dice.

Quality and documents

  • Lot COA with every container, from an independent ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory: moisture, water activity, total plate count, yeasts and moulds, coliforms, E. coli and Salmonella, plus a physical and sensory release check; particle size checked at release.
  • Contaminant surveillance: lead, arsenic and aflatoxin under periodic third-party testing, with reports available on request.
  • Market panels: heavy metals including cadmium, pesticide multi-residue, Listeria, acrylamide or a nutrition panel, booked before stuffing.
  • Trial lots: a free release QC log; third-party testing at lab cost, credited in full to your first container.
  • Pre-shipment and retained samples: 100–200 g from the packed lot in two sealed foil pouches; a retained sample from every container lot kept for its full shelf life.
  • Certifications: HACCP, ISO 22000, BRC (qualified processing facility), US FDA Facility Registration.
  • Standard export dossier with every shipment: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, C/O Form EUR.1, phytosanitary certificate and lot COA.

Import and labeling

  • Classification: 100% sweet potato powder falls under HS 1106.20 (flour, meal and powder of roots and tubers of heading 07.14). Sweet potato starch is a different heading (1108.19), and a carrier or anti-caking agent can change the line, so keep the declaration matched to the ingredient list. Full guidance by market: sweet potato HS code and customs.
  • European Union: CN 1106 20 90. Origins without a trade agreement pay 166 EUR per tonne; Vietnamese origin with Form EUR.1 enters at 0% under the EVFTA (EU TARIC).
  • No increased border checks: sweet potato powder is not on the EU list of products under increased official controls, so containers clear on standard frequency.
  • United Kingdom: same commodity code, with Form EUR.1 under UKVFTA.
  • United States: HTSUS heading 1106.20; the partner facility holds US FDA Facility Registration, and FruitBuys supplies Prior Notice data and the supplier file your FSVP needs.
  • UAE / GCC: importer product registration and Arabic labeling for retail packs.

Verify the sample

  1. Colour: even light yellow to golden; grey or brown tones point to slow blanching or heat damage.
  2. Aroma: open the pouch and smell baked sweet potato; a flat, cardboard note suggests hot-air dried flour.
  3. Mesh: sift 100 g through an 80-mesh screen and weigh what stays on top against your spec.
  4. Dispersion: stir 10 g into 100 ml of warm milk for 30 seconds; it should mix smoothly without cooking.
  5. Water activity: read a sealed pouch within minutes of opening; ≤0.30 passes.
  6. Ingredient line: “sweet potato” only for the standard grade; maltodextrin, sugar or starch means a different product.

FAQ

Is sweet potato powder the same as sweet potato flour?

Not quite. Freeze-dried powder keeps the golden colour, baked sweet potato aroma and fiber, and mixes without cooking. Hot-air dried flour is duller in colour and flavour and usually needs cooking. Both are classified under HS 1106.20.

Is freeze-dried sweet potato powder a starch?

No. Starch is extracted from the root and washed white; it thickens but carries no colour, flavour or fiber. FD powder is the whole root, dried and milled.

Does it contain added sugar?

No. The sweetness is the root’s own, and the ingredient is 100% sweet potato in the standard grade.

Will it cake in storage?

Not in its sealed foil bag with desiccant at Aw ≤0.30. Once a bag is opened, reseal it with the desiccant and use it within 2–4 weeks. For high-speed filling lines, the free-flowing grade with E551 ≤1% runs more evenly.

Can it be used in baby cereal?

Yes, by manufacturers: it mixes into warm water or milk without re-cooking. Add a heavy-metal panel to your lot spec; FruitBuys books it before stuffing.

How long does it last?

12 months at ≤25 °C and RH ≤60%, and 18–24 months in cool storage at ≤18 °C and RH ≤50%, in the original foil bag with desiccant.

What is the HS code for sweet potato powder?

1106.20 for 100% sweet potato powder; EU CN 1106 20 90.

How do I start?

Order a sample for your pilot, then a trial of 1–2 full export cartons before a container contract. Private label starts at 500 kg per SKU.
