Freeze-Dried Taro Powder

Freeze-dried taro powder is 100% taro corm (Colocasia esculenta), fully steamed through to the core, freeze-dried and milled to 80–100 mesh, with nothing added: no sugar, creamer, flavour, colour or carrier. It disperses at once in hot water or milk and thickens into a smooth taro paste with 1.5–2 parts liquid. FruitBuys supplies it from the Mekong Delta (Dong Thap) and the Central Highlands (Lam Dong) of Vietnam, milled from the same steamed taro as our freeze-dried taro dice and sticks.

Stir a spoonful into hot milk and you get what a taro drink is meant to taste like: mildly sweet and nutty, with chestnut and vanilla notes and a rich, creamy body that comes from the taro’s own starch, not from fat. The colour is a soft lilac-grey, the colour of real taro. If your menu needs the vivid purple your customers know, we blend it with freeze-dried purple sweet potato to your shade, so every store pours the same cup from one scoop. It sits in our dried fruit powder range.

Real taro powder or taro flavour powder: what are you buying?

“Taro powder” on a quote can mean two very different products. Read the ingredient list before you compare prices.

Freeze-dried taro powder (this product)Typical taro milk tea premix
Ingredient listTaroNon-dairy creamer, sugar, glucose, then taro powder, flavour and colours
Taro content100%At most about a quarter of the weight when taro is listed fourth; some contain no taro at all
Added sugar0 gThe second or first ingredient
ColourNatural lilac-grey, or purple from purple sweet potatoOften artificial colours
FlavourSteamed taro: nutty, chestnut, vanillaMainly taro flavouring

What you pay freight onTaro onlyMostly creamer and sugar

Ingredient lists run in order of weight. When creamer, sugar and glucose all sit ahead of taro, at least three-quarters of every kilo you import is not taro, and some “taro” premixes list only sweet potato powder and colour. With freeze-dried taro powder you buy the taro, add sugar and creamer you can source at home, and keep the recipe as yours. Taro is the fastest-growing flavour in bubble tea, at a projected 13.9% a year from 2026 to 2033 (Grand View Research, 2026), so the drink that tastes of real taro is the one worth putting on the menu. The cup-by-cup detail is in real taro vs taro flavour powder for milk tea.

HS code1106.20 (US HTSUS 1106.20.90; EU CN 1106 20 90)

Steamed first, so it needs no cooking. Taro must be cooked to lose the calcium oxalate itch of the raw corm. Because the corm is steamed through before drying, the powder goes straight into a cold-blended latte base, an ice cream mix or a bread dough. Why the steam matters is explained step by step in how freeze-dried taro is made.

Mesh decides the mouthfeel. At 80–100 mesh the powder disappears in a drink and gives a smooth paste for fillings. Choose 60 mesh when you want a slightly grainy, homemade taro texture in a bun or mooncake filling, and 120 mesh for the smoothest latte. The fineness is fixed in your contract and checked by sieve on the sample.

Colour: natural lilac or your own purple

Real taro powder is light lilac-grey. That is the colour to expect, and it is the honest one: deep purple taro drinks are coloured with purple sweet potato, ube or artificial colour. You have two clean-label routes to purple:

  • Custom pre-blend. FruitBuys blends taro powder with freeze-dried purple sweet potato powder at the ratio that matches your approved colour sample, from 500 kg per blend. The purple sweet potato is grown in the Mekong Delta (Binh Tan, Vinh Long Province) and the Central Highlands (Dak Lak, Gia Lai, Lam Dong), the same two growing regions as the taro. The ratio is fixed in the contract and every lot is checked against your sample, so your stores get one scoop, one colour.
  • Two powders, your blend. Buy both powders and set the ratio in your own plant, which suits brands running several shades or seasonal drinks.

Either way the label reads taro and purple sweet potato, with no artificial colour. How taro, ube and purple sweet potato differ in colour and flavour is in taro vs ube.

10–13 g of fibre and 1,300–1,900 mg of potassium per 100 g, with 0.5 g fat and no added sugar: on an EU panel the powder reaches “high fibre”, “high potassium”, “low fat” and “low sodium”, plus “no added sugars”. That gives a real-taro drink or dessert a front-of-pack story a premix cannot match. It is vegan and naturally gluten-free, and a lot gluten test is available when your pack carries a gluten-free claim. For your printed label, FruitBuys samples your commercial lot and arranges the panel in FDA or EU format.

Packaging

ItemDetail
Bulk5 kg sealed aluminium-foil PE bags with food-grade silica gel, four to a 20 kg carton as standard or three to a 15 kg carton where your plant sets a lower manual-handling weight; no nitrogen flush and no iron-based oxygen absorber; 1 kg bags for cafés, or a single 20 kg bag for large industrial mixers, on request
Carton58 × 28 × 34 cm, 15–20 kg net; custom cartons and palletisation on request
Retail (OEM)30 g / 50 g / 100 g / 500 g aluminium-foil zip pouches, or custom sizes; digital print from 3,000–5,000 pouches per SKU, rotogravure from 500 kg per SKU
Shelf life12 months at ≤25 °C, RH ≤60%; 18–24 months in cool storage at ≤18 °C, RH ≤50%; unopened foil bag with desiccant

Pure taro powder picks up humidity faster than pieces, so it ships in 5 kg bags rather than one large sack: open one bag per run while the others stay sealed, and use it through within one to two weeks; reseal a part-used bag at once with the desiccant inside, and keep it out of humid rooms and fridges, where condensation forms lumps. If your filling line runs in a humid hall, specify the free-flowing version. Storage and bag build are in how long freeze-dried taro lasts.

Quality and documents

  • Every lot: COA from an independent ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory for moisture, water activity, total plate count, yeasts and moulds, coliforms, E. coli, Salmonella and Bacillus cereus, plus sensory checks. B. cereus is on the list because taro powder is a starchy, ready-to-use ingredient.
  • Inclusion grade: a tighter microbiology limit (for example TPC <1,000 CFU/g, B. cereus ≤10² CFU/g) for ice cream, dairy and drinks that are not re-heated, confirmed on each lot COA.
  • Heavy metals and residues: lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury and multi-residue pesticides are tested on request or per destination market. FruitBuys arranges independent testing at an accredited laboratory of the buyer’s choice, such as Eurofins or SGS in Vietnam, before the container is sealed.
  • On request: particle size, Listeria monocytogenes, sulfite and a nutrition panel in FDA or EU format.
  • Trial orders: ship with a free release QC log; third-party testing on trial lots is arranged on request.
  • Retained sample: kept from every container lot for its full shelf life, up to 24 months.
  • Facility control: one qualified partner facility is locked per contract. Any change needs prior written notice and re-approval of the pre-shipment sample, and you have audit access.
  • Facility certifications: HACCP, ISO 22000, US FDA Facility Registration and BRC (qualified processing facility). Halal certification available on request.
  • Shipment documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, COA, Certificate of Origin Form EUR.1 for the EU and UK or Form CEPA for the UAE, and a phytosanitary certificate with every shipment as part of FruitBuys’ standard export dossier.

What each line of the COA should prove is in what a freeze-dried taro COA should prove.

Import and labeling

Taro powder is exported under 1106.20, the heading for flour, meal and powder of the roots and tubers of heading 07.14. A pre-blend with purple sweet potato powder stays in the same heading, because both are powders of 07.14 roots. In the US Harmonized Tariff Schedule, 1106.20.90 carries a free general rate of duty, against 8.3% for taro pieces under 0714.40.60, plus any applicable US trade tariffs in force on the entry date, confirmed by your customs broker against the current HTSUS schedule. For a US drink-base or bakery line, powder is the lower-duty way to bring taro in.

For the EU and UK, a Form EUR.1 under the Vietnam trade agreements travels with the shipment and claims preferential treatment; your broker can check the current rate for CN 1106 20 90 on the EU Access2Markets tariff and rules-of-origin tool. For the UAE, a Form CEPA goes with every shipment. Every container carries the same dossier: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, COA, certificate of origin and phytosanitary certificate.

On the pack, the ingredient line reads “taro”, or “taro, purple sweet potato” for the colour blend. Do not call it “taro flavour powder”: that name belongs to premixes. Duty by market and the tests destination markets check are in taro HS code and import documents.

Verify the sample in five steps

  1. Read the label. One ingredient, taro (or taro and purple sweet potato for a blend). Anything else is a premix.
  2. Check the colour. Even lilac-grey through the bag, or the exact shade of your approved blend sample.
  3. Sieve it. At least the agreed share passes your mesh; no hard lumps.
  4. Read the water activity within a minute. Seal powder in the meter chamber within 60 seconds of opening the bag; at or below 0.30 the lot was dried and sealed right. Keep the second sealed pouch for your own lab.
  5. Make one cup and one paste. Whisk 1 part powder into 1.5–2 parts hot milk: it should disperse without lumps, taste of steamed taro and thicken into a smooth paste. Approve the pre-shipment sample in writing; it becomes the reference for your container.

FAQ

Is this taro flavour powder?

No. It is 100% freeze-dried taro, milled, with no sugar, creamer, flavour or colour. Taro flavour powders are premixes in which creamer and sugar make up most of the weight.

Does it contain sugar?

No added sugar. Taro itself carries 1–4 g of natural sugars per 100 g, which gives the powder its mild sweetness.

Why is it lilac-grey and not purple?

That is the natural colour of taro. Deep purple taro drinks are coloured with purple sweet potato, ube or artificial colour. FruitBuys can pre-blend the powder with freeze-dried purple sweet potato to your shade.

Can you blend it to our colour?

Yes. Custom pre-blends with freeze-dried purple sweet potato powder start from 500 kg per blend, matched and checked against your approved colour sample.

Does it clump?

Pure taro powder takes up humidity once opened. Use batch-sized bags, reseal part-used bags with the desiccant, or specify the free-flowing version with an anti-caking agent.

Does it need cooking?

No. The taro is steamed through before drying, so the powder is ready to use in drinks, desserts, fillings and doughs.

How much powder goes into one cup of milk tea?

It depends on cup size, colour target and how much taro you want to taste. Set the dose with a sample in your own recipe; typical working ranges are in real taro vs taro flavour powder for milk tea.

What is the minimum order for private label?

500 kg per SKU for OEM, ODM and private-label packing.
